La Beauty Island

The word Ibiza is the name of one of the most famous islands of the Balearic archipelago located in Spain off the Mediterranean coast. The small island stands out for the beauty of its coves and landscapes and the transparency of its marine waters.

The name Ibiza, in Catalan Eivissa, comes from the Latin variant Ebusia (attested since the poet Statius in the 1st century A.D.), from the name given by the Romans Ebusus, which is a Latinization of its Punic name, because the island before passing to the Roman world in the 2nd century B.C., was an important Carthaginian enclave, was an important Carthaginian enclave, and that was Ībošim, of dubious etymology, perhaps related to the name of the god Bes who was the most worshiped in the islands.

The Greeks also knew the archipelago in which are actually distinguished two separate groups of islands, which the Greeks considered two archipelagos. One group is formed by the two larger islands Mallorca and Menorca, together with the small island of Cabrera. Another group of islands almost together is formed by Ibiza, Formentera and some smaller islets. These the Greeks called Πιτυόεσσαι (“Pityoessai”, Pitiusas islands), a name meaning “abundant in pine trees”, “place of pine trees”.

The history of Ibiza is fascinating and enriching with a great influence of the different cultures that have passed through the island throughout its history. During the XVII and XVIII centuries Ibiza grew and with the arrival of the first bishop numerous churches were built all over the island. Most of the villages of Ibiza are named after saints because they were formed around these churches. Thus each small village acquired the name of the saint to whom the church was erected.

The island of Ibiza is divided into five municipalities: Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Antoni de Portmany and Eivissa.

The most beautiful villages of Ibiza are:

  • Santa Agnés de Corona. It is one of the smallest villages of Ibiza, but one of the most charming.
  • Es Cubells.
  • San Carlos de Peralta.
  • Santa Eulalia del Río.
  • Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera.
  • Sant Joan de Labritja.
  • San Llorenç de Baláfia.

Discover the White Island

One of the greatest pleasures you can have on this eternal white island is to explore it and get to know it at your own pace.

First-time visitors to Ibiza are invited to take a tour of the historic center to discover firsthand everything there is to know about this beautiful island.

This beautiful city has been a stopping point for pirates, Romans, Muslims and Vandals since it was established in 654, so yes, you will learn more about the history and secrets of this city.

Dalt Vila

On a small hill overlooking the city, Dalt Vila – literally, “high city” – is an ancient walled citadel overlooking the city. Dalt Vila, founded and called Ibosim by the Phoenicians, was one of the most important coastal cities in the Mediterranean. Kings Charles I and Philip II built the walls surrounding the citadel to defend it from French and Ottoman invasions. It is impossible not to fall in love with this melting pot of history, ancient buildings and walls that is Dalt Vila.

Can Soleil

A small square room without walls is represented and symbolized by two large doors, made of wood and framed with beautiful Arabic engravings. Located between the beaches of Cala Codolar and Cala Llentia, this work of art is quite curious. Due to its location on the property of Guy Laliberté, founder of Cirque du Soleil, this monument is known as The Doors of Can Soleil.

The Atlantis of Ibiza is not like other beaches or coves of the Mediterranean, it is a magical and unique place. The huge stones with almost perfect geometric shapes are what have made Atlantis one of the things to see in Ibiza. Sa Pedrera, a small cove located next to the impressive rock of Es Vedrà, is sometimes known as Atlantis, but the name is fictitious. Its unique characteristics make it a special place.

The gates of heaven

The enclave known by Ibicencans as Sa Penya Esbarrada became known as The Gates of Heaven in the 1960s and 1970s. From the viewpoint you can enjoy an unbeatable view of Ses Margalides in the summer months, when the nearby cliffs do not hide the sunset.

Discovering Formentera is something that no one can miss on a trip to Ibiza. Take your time to explore the island’s natural beauty: its beaches, its villages and its cultural gems. Enjoy a relaxing swim and snorkel at Illetas beach in Formentera. With crystal clear, turquoise waters, Espalmador, Ses Illetes and Levante offer a boho chic island experience in the Mediterranean.

Es Vedra, magic and energy on the island

One of Ibiza’s favorite places, both for locals and tourists, is curiously outside of Ibiza: the islet of Es Vedrà.

This huge pyramid of rock is located in the southwest of the island in front of Cala d’Hort, in the municipality of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia. Due to its high ecological value, it is protected as a nature reserve since 2002 in the Parc de Cala d’Hort i Es Vedrà, formed by the islets of Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell and Es Illots de Ponent.

Its unique shape and colossal size of 382 meters above the sea make Es Vedrà easily visible and recognizable from many points of Ibiza, Formentera and even from the Iberian Peninsula. In recent decades, dozens of myths and and legends have been written about an islet “with magical properties of energy accumulation”.

The islet is considered a magical place.

Its powerful energy is said to envelop the island of Ibiza and to be the reason for strange phenomena such as the disorientation of carrier pigeons passing over Es Vedrà.

Beaches and coves in Ibiza

Enjoy the best paradises of the Mediterranean coast. The island of Ibiza has an endless number of coves and beaches where you can let yourself be rocked by the waves, relax in the sun and let the breeze brush against you. Our eight dream scenarios reveal what to do in Ibiza if you like beach tourism.

Cala Salada

Cala Salada, surrounded by a lush green environment, is one of the most popular beaches among locals and tourists thanks to its crystal clear turquoise waters, its almost untouched Mediterranean landscape and its fine golden sand.

Cala Comte

A beach of fine pearly sand and intense turquoise waters, Cala Comte is one of the best in Ibiza. It is a unique gastronomic and bathing destination located south of San José. In addition, you can see small islets such as Es Bosc, Sa Conillera, Ses Bledes and S’Esparta.

Tarida Cove

Cala Tarida has a long and wide beach of excellent fine white sand in the small tourist town of Cala Tarida. Under its clean and crystalline waters is a sandy seabed. The sea here is a vivid turquoise blue and emerald green.

D’hort Cove

There are few coves in Ibiza that are as beautiful and serene as Cala D’hort. A small and charming beach, Cala d’Hort also offers a view of the mysterious islet of Es Vedrà. It is a great beach for surfing on windy days, when the biggest waves crash against the shore.

Ses Salines Beach

Long and with fine sand, Playa de Ses Salines is surrounded by warm turquoise waters that barely reach a few centimeters from the shore. Its name is due to the large expanse of land in the south of the island where the sea is let in to evaporate and gain salt. Next to the beach are still visible the only train tracks of the island, where in the past the trains that transported the island used to run.

White Waters

The beach is located in the northwest of Ibiza. It is a long and wide beach, with cliffs that protect it from the east wind, which gives it a wild aspect. In spite of its inhospitable aspect, it is a special place with a very special charm. From there you can see Tagomago.

Nova Cove

Beautiful sandy beach of turquoise waters, surrounded by pine trees and with a quiet and relaxed atmosphere in Santa Eulalia. One of the most beautiful beaches of the east coast of Ibiza. Its shallow waters and golden sand that goes into the sea are a blessing. Ibiza’s Cala Nova beach has some of the best surfing conditions on the island when the wind is right.

Xarraca Cove

With its transparent waters, Cala Xarraca is an ideal destination for snorkeling or diving, and taking unforgettable photos. With a length of 90 meters and a width of 15 meters, it is one of the most isolated coves of Ibiza and has unparalleled views. The area is surrounded by lush pine forests, with whitewashed houses scattered around, and has steep cliffs all around.
